C1 Business Higher (Cambridge Business English Certificate)

What is C1 Business Higher?

The C1 Business Higher qualification shows employers that you have attained the highest level of Business English.

C1 Business Higher is one of three exams in the Cambridge Business English Certificates (BEC) range.

Each test is targeted at a different level, with C1 Business Higher being at an Advanced level of English.

Cambridge C1 Business Higher Certifcate

The C1 Business Higher - Business English Certificate (BEC) - is an internationally recognized Business English test which enables English language learners who are using, or will probably need to use, English in a professional work context to obtain an international certification in Business English.

C1 Business Higher is the highest level of the three Cambridge business exams:

  • C1 Business Higher
  • B2 Business Vantage
  • B1 Business Preliminary

Cambridge C1 Higher Test

There are four different sections to the Cambridge C1 Business Higher Test

Reading Test

(Time allowed 1 hour)

This section consists of six different reading tasks. They are designed to evaluate reading skills such as reading for global meaning, specific detail and general meaning, and vocabulary knowledge, as well as knowledge of structure and discourse features.

Writing Test



(Time allowed 1 hour 10 minutes)

This part of the test consists of two writing tasks.

The first writing task evaluates your ability to produce a piece of concise writing, which normally involves descriptive and comparative functions based on graphical information.

The second, longer writing task, evaluates your ability to use summarizing skills, make recommendations, use language of persuasion, and evaluate and explain information.

Listening Test

(Time allowed 40 minutes)

Candidates are presented with three different listening tasks.

These are designed to evaluate your ability to understand a range of both monologues and dialogues, and tasks normally involve note making, identifying specific information, identifying topics, functions and opinions, etc., as well as being able to interpret arguments and opinions.

Speaking Test

(Time allowed 16 minutes)

The BEC Higher speaking test consists of conversation, a short mini-presentation, normally on a business related topic, and a discussion section.

The speaking test is normally carried out with another BEC candidate, and the examiner.
