Good luck!

How to start your cover letter

To start your cover letter, there are a few ways you can go about it. You can opt for a formal introduction, or try something a little more creative to catch the attention of recruiters.

If you're unsure which route to take, consider your audience and the tone of the job listing. A more formal approach may be best for a traditional company, while a creative opening can work well for a start-up.

Here are a few examples of how to start your cover letter:

Example 1: Formal Introduction

To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing concerning the open position for Marketing Manager at XYZ Company. I saw the job listing on Indeed and feel that my skills and qualifications make me the perfect candidate for the role.

In my current position as a Marketing Specialist at ABC Company, I have increased sales by 20% through innovative marketing campaigns. I am confident that I could bring my experience and success to XYZ Company and help contribute to your bottom line.

I would welcome the opportunity to discuss my skills and qualifications further with you during an interview. Thank you in advance for considering my application.

Sincerely,

Your name

Example 2: Creative Introduction

Dear hiring manager,

If you're looking for a marketer who can take [name of company] to the next level, you've found your match. I am excited to apply for the Marketing Manager position at XYZ Company.

In my current position as a Marketer at ABC Company, I have increased sales by 20% through innovative marketing campaigns. I am confident that I could bring my experience and success to XYZ Company and help contribute to your bottom line.

I would welcome an opportunity to expand on how my skills and experience could benefit XYZ Company at an interview. Thank you for considering me for the position.

Sincerely,

Your name

The second paragraph

Now you want to continue building on the momentum you've already created. The second paragraph of your dream job cover letter should be all about how you can benefit the company you're applying to.

You can do this by highlighting your experience and successes in your current role and linking them to what the company is looking for in a candidate. Be specific with your examples, and always back up your claims with data or results.

Example

As the current Marketing Manager at XYZ Company, I have increased our social media following by 20% and helped launch three successful campaigns that generated over $1 million in revenue. I'm confident I could bring the same level of success to ABC Company, as your next Marketing Manager.

In this example, the candidate highlights their relevant experience and accomplishments and demonstrates how they would be a valuable asset to the company they're applying to.

If you don't have much relevant work experience, you can focus on explaining how your skills would benefit the company. For example, if you're a recent graduate, you might mention how your research skills could help with market analysis.

Example

I am a recent graduate of XYZ University and I am interested in obtaining a position as a marketing assistant at ABC Company. My research skills and attention to detail would be beneficial in conducting market analysis and developing marketing plans. I am also proficient in Microsoft Office applications and have experience creating presentations, which would be useful for creating sales materials.

In either case, the goal is to show that you would be an asset to the company and that you're the best candidate for the job.

The third paragraph

Reinforce your interest in the company, and explain why you would be a good fit for the role. This is your chance to sell yourself to the employer.

Example

I am excited to apply for the Research Analyst position at Company. Based on my research, I believe that my skills and experience would make me a perfect fit for the role. I am passionate about market research and analysis, and I am confident that I could be an asset to your team. I would love the opportunity to put my skills to work in a company like yours, and I believe that I could contribute to your success.

The fourth paragraph

In the final paragraph, thank the employer for their time, and express your hope that you will be allowed to further discuss your qualifications and skills at an interview.

You can also use this space to mention any attachments, such as a resume or portfolio.

Example

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you, and I would be grateful for the opportunity to discuss my qualifications in person. I have attached my resume and a portfolio of my work for your review.

Your cover letter should be no more than one page long. If you have difficulty keeping it concise, try focusing on only the most relevant experiences and accomplishments.
